We respond to community need through the ideas and hopes of people who come to spend time with us.
Our history
One Double Five Community House began in 1993. St John’s Uniting Church in Kensington had wanted to respond effectively to community needs, and conducted a survey in local communities.
This identified the need for a place to meet, for basic skills training and for free legal advice.
An old villa was purchased and a community competition decided on the name for our newly established centre; ‘One Double Five Community House’.
Discussions around the table grew ideas and projects, some of which endured for just a season, others continue as separate entities.
Over the years, we have initiated a number of community programmes and projects that now stand alone. These include Taitokerau Emergency Housing, Channel North, the Kissing Point waka ama compound, and Otangarei’s Te Puawaitanga Medical Centre.
More recently, our busy Open Arms day centre was established in immediate response to community need and ahead of securing funding.
